A paywall is a system or strategy that restricts access to digital content, such as news, articles, videos, or other types of information, by requiring users to pay a fee or subscribe to a service to access protected content.

In essence, it's a barrier that prevents free access to online content unless the user agrees to pay or subscribe. Paywalls are often used by news publishers and other online content producers as a way to generate revenue, protect their work, and encourage readers to subscribe.

What Paywalls Are There?

There are basically two types: Hard Paywall and Soft Paywall.

Hard Paywall: In this model, access to content is completely blocked, and users can only read it after paying or subscribing.

Soft Paywall: In this case, some content is accessible for free, while premium or more exclusive content is protected by a paywall. This allows you to attract a wider audience while also encouraging people to pay for higher-quality content.

How to Bypass Paywalls?

1 - Using Sites like 12ft.io, Archive.is, or LeiaIsso.net

Copy the URL of the content behind a paywall and access sites like 12ft.io, Archive.is, or LeiaIsso.net. Paste the URL into the appropriate field on these sites.

OR

2 - Modifying the URL

Add "12ft.io/", "archive.is/", or "leiaisso.net/" before the address you want to bypass the paywall.

3 - Using the Burlesco Script in Tampermonkey

I use the Burlesco script in Tampermonkey, which automatically handles the entire process when you access the site. It's very practical.

4 - Medium-Specific Methods

Medium has an annoying paywall.
To bypass it, use Freedium.
There's also Medium Parser, a Chrome extension that bundles several alternatives (Google Cache, Read-Medium, Freedium, Archive.today, Archive.is, and Proxy API). It's very good!

5 - Using uBlock Origin + Bypass Paywalls Clean Filter

I've occasionally used the uBlock Origin + Bypass Paywalls Clean filter.
In uBlock settings, go to Filter List -> Import -> Paste the filter URL.
Filter URL: Bypass Paywalls Clean Filter

6 - "Can I Read?" Project

There's also the "Can I Read?" project, but I've never tested it to see how it works.

7 - Manual Method in Firefox

If you want a more "roots" method:
In Firefox, press F12, then F1 to access settings, select "Disable Javascript," and press F5 to reload the page.

8 - Using LeiaIsso.net

Another useful site is LeiaIsso.net.
Just copy and paste the article link into the site.

9 - Block Scripts in Brave

For those who use Brave, you can block scripts on the page in the ad-block shield and bypass the paywall.

Conclusion

These are some ways to bypass paywalls and access online content without paying.

However, remember that paying for quality content is a way to support creators and ensure they can continue producing valuable information.

Important (I'll say it again):

  • Respect the work of content creators: consider financially supporting the websites and content producers you appreciate.
  • Please use these tools responsibly: bypassing paywalls may violate some sites' terms of use.
